Equipping Yourself with an Idea and App Design Software

With so many mobile phones out on the market, its no wonder why there are an abundance of applications being written by so many developers.  All it takes is an idea, some skill, and the right design software and you can publish an application for public consumption.

You can’t pick up a newspaper or magazine today without seeing some kind of article (or three) about tablets or smartphones. And we’re not even talking about non-serious journals that have too much space to fill and no ideas. Were talking about the New York Times or the Washington Post or Time Magazine. And to think that smartphones are only just getting started. Mobile devices will soon dominate the media space. With this many smartphones out there, there are plenty of opportunities for software developers who have an idea for an app. Get an idea, learn the right coding skills, equip yourself with the app design software that you need and you could be in business!

Basically, any new app is going to be really successful if you know that it can: help solve a certain practical problem, answer the needs of a niche really well, and present a well designed yet simple interface. In fact, if your app idea could answer just one of these requirements well and you could well be on your way to success.

You have to be fairly creative to come up with a good idea for an application. There’s not a whole lot we can say about that here. Let’s move on then to what we really can help you with – the actual technical process by which you take an idea and bring it to fruition.

As an example, let’s go with Apple’s mobile devices – the iPod and the iPhone. Equipping yourself with the right app design software, your first port of call should be Apple itself. You’ll first need to join the Apple iPhone Developer Program – you’ll need to sign up for a membership. It’ll cost you $99. You’ll need to get a Mac, you’ll need to get an iPhone or whatever it is you’re designing your app for, and then, you will need to download the iPhone Software Developer Kit. With all this in place, you are pretty much set with your first step towards being an app designer.

For your next step, you really do need to equip yourself with the right app design software. Right away, this isn’t what you think it is. We aren’t talking about any specific software that’s aimed at helping you program an app. We’re talking instead about software like Photoshop that helps you get the visual aspects of your new app ready.

If you’re really good at this kind of thing, you could hire a graphic designer. You don’t really have to be a programmer yourself to be successful at designing apps. You could just have an idea and put a team together. You don’t imagine that Steve Jobs ever programmed Mac OS X or iOS himself, do you? Do you?

The actual programming itself happens in the app development software that Apple has developed. It’s called XCode. It’s free, and the formal description for the software is, that it’s an Integrated Development Environment.

To be able to use this, you need to know how to program in a language called Objective C.

If you’ve never programmed anything before, you have to remember that using app design software isn’t as hard as you might imagine. Programming an app is a lot easier than learning how to program for an actual computer. If you put your mind to it, you will probably have the skills you need in about six months.  Just give yourself the necessary time and patience for learning a new skill or visit your local educational resource.  Once you’ve mastered some of the basics, you’d be on your way to app design heaven.
